View Full Version : Cell phone in Italy Giovanni Nason 10-02-2007, 08:59 PM Sto'organizzando un viaggio in Italia, desidero sapere se posso usare il cellulare Nokia il mio server in U.S.A.e' T..Mobile.Grazie per l'aiuto.Giovanni paolo 10-02-2007, 09:17 PM Giovanni you can use a US based phone if you make sure that the cell phone is unlocked or make sure that T Mobile unlocks the phone. If the phone is unlocked you can then insert an Italian cell phone card ( GSM card ) and use the Italian network without paying roaming charges. Ciao Paolo DEramo 10-24-2007, 03:56 PM Ciao What Paolo says is also my first suggestion. Most U.S. carriers have or soon will have international service. I carry T-mobile and had no problem whatsoever using it all over Italia this past August. My second recommend is to rent one, 2 ways of doing this... #1 - If you are renting a car from Auto Europe, they used to give them away to car rental customers at no additional charge. #2 - Use a good cell rental company like www.travelcell.com and arrange for it to be mail to you house before you leave the states. Tell em Derek from Ponzio Travel recommended them! Ciao P.S. - 3rd option, rent on at any airport soon as you arrive in Italia...usually the most costly method but, its an option. paolo 10-24-2007, 04:49 PM Hi Derek Yes - of course you can use T-Mobile but you will have to pay roaming charges and people from Italy will have to do a call to the US each time they need to reach you. It is probably going to cost them less that calling an Italian cell phone but they will not know and some people are always scared to call overseas. Paolo DEramo 10-25-2007, 03:54 PM Ciao Paolo Good point! Well T-mobile has fixed charges now, $1.00 a minute in or outbound. From what I seen from cell rental companies thats about the same. My last 2 week trip, came with a bill of bout $130 dollars if I recall. But the nice thing was, T-Mobile dosn't charge any kind of international plan cost. If you have a phone with them that can handle the euro network, the its free except for usage. Ciao! sardoman 10-26-2007, 01:06 PM Giovanni If the phone is unlocked you can then insert an Italian cell phone card ( GSM card ) and use the Italian network without paying roaming charges. The only problem with getting a GSM card in Italy is that if you are getting one for the first time (i.e. a new phone number) you need to have a Codice Fiscale and a permanent address in Italy. Furthermore, if you don't use the card for more than six month the network provider will probably disconnect your number. This is because there are more mobile phones registered in Italy than there are people. So, Giovanni, if you have any friends or family there ask around and you will probably be able to borrow a card for the duration of your trip. Joeybell 10-26-2007, 07:14 PM I was in Italy for 3 weeks in September. I was born in Italy but am not an Italian citizen. I have an unlocked Blackberry. At the Rome train station I went to the TIM store produced my passport ( they need the passport ) & bought a Italian SIM card . After that you can get the SIM card re-filled at most ( not all ) tobacco shops or bars. P.S This is the first time I have purchased an Italian SIM card. sardoman 10-30-2007, 02:51 PM I was in Italy for 3 weeks in September. I was born in Italy but am not an Italian citizen. That's good to hear, obviously things have changed since I moved here. I half expected to have to submit to an internal to get mine  Auguri 10-31-2007, 03:53 AM As others have mentioned, you can use T-Mobile in italy. I just returned 2 wks ago from a 3-wk trip and had no trouble at all. My phone is a Motorola, about 3 yrs old, and I just had T-Mobile enable it for international use (no charge for this). Calls are 99 cents a minute. This applies to checking voicemails as well. But it worked great. No need for a new SIM card or rental phone! |
