I am going to live in Venice for six months and would like to know the best way to get to know people who are not just short stay tourists. I want to be able to improve my Italian through conversation, as opposed to a formal class, and I love to sing so would appreciate knowing what choirs I could join there.

I would check cafes for postings from Italians who want to practice English. That way you get to meet the locals and improve your language skills in one shot.
