The song was originally written in Italian. The title "Volare nel blu dipinto di blu" translates to "Fly in the blue painted sky". Modugno co-wrote it with Franco Migliacci after Modugno told Franco about a dream he had where he was flying through the clouds with blue painted hands. It became Modugno's only surefire hit in the United States, and it was #1 for 5 straight weeks in 1958.

At the time it was the first single to top the singles charts in the rock era in a foreign language. Soon after, Billboard magazine gave it the #1 spot for 1958.

Bobby Rydell (#4 in 1960)
Al Martino (#33 in 1975)


When Modugno performed this for the first time at the Sanremo Song Festival in Italy, he was awarded first prize.

The name was so popular, Plymouth named one of their cars after it, but it did not last long.
Famous Italians like Andrea Bocelli, Luciano Pavarotti and many others have their own spin on the song. The Gypsy Kings made a rhumba version included in their 1989 album Mosaique. The lyrics are in Spanish as well, although in the Spanish version the repeating chorus where they sing is in Italian.

Thanks, Paolo, have been listening non-stop to the Modugno version for the past two weeks, very thrilled to have learnt up the lyrics too:), but did not know of the other versions....I like the first one best though!
