Hello. Chris and I are going to be staying in the Testaccia District of Trastevere. I have done some reading regarding Trastevere, but haven't come across a hole lot about the particular district. It is a particular part of Trastevere, like where I live in Washington, USA.....in our town of Spokane we call areas like the Northside, The Valley, SouthHill etc. Is this similar. Also, where would be some really neat back alley resturants to eat at, where would you recommend???? Also, we are going to be renting an Apartment instead of a hotel room....any good fresh markets??? Thank you in advance. Amy

Testaccio is a good area to live but it is not Trastevere. They are close and both next to the river. At night you can walk around most of the Trastevere area while Testaccio has only one much smaller part where there is some nightlife. Overall Trastevere because of its nightlife and its proximity to the center of Rome, Gianicolo and S Pietro is more expensive and more desiderable. it is however hard to find parking in Trastevere. There are lots of good fresh markets in both places however - the Testaccio market is quite famous.

Hi Amy and Chris,

Here are a couple of my favorite restaurants in Trastevere -

Osteria der Belli (Piazza Sant'Apollonia 9-11) has lots of outdoor seating and is charming inside as well. My husband and I ate here a lot. It's not expensive and the food is fabulous. A friend who visited this summer said this was her family's best meal in Rome. I believe they are closed on Mondays (06 580 3782)

Da Corrado (Via della Pelliccia) is another favorite, also inexpensive. You have to keep an open mind here though; it's a hole in the wall. Not much charm but you'll only find Italians here. The staff won't speak a word of English, the only menu is a sign outside the door. Take a good look before you go in and don't hesitate too much or the waiter will tell you what you'll have! The food is great, but get there around 8:00 p.m. Too early and they won't be open and much later than this and you'll have a long wait.

Congrats on your nuptials! Rome is a very special place to start your new life together. Martha
