ITALY GIVES GREEN LIGHT TO MOTORWAYS MERGER
http://www.lifeinitaly.com/news/news-detailed.asp?newsid=3315

The autostradas (expressways) in Italy are toll roads: you pay to drive on these expressways. Anyone who lives here knows that maintenance is not always good. Here in the north of Italy, especially in Lombardy province (Lombardia) home to Milan, the autostrada, i.e. the toll way is not of good quality. In my opinion other regions of Italy, Piedmont, Reggio Emilia, Tuscany, and Lazio all have better expressways etc.

And, now we hear how the private company "Autostrada" and a Spanish Company are merging to expand, take more control and make more profit from us (the local Italian drivers, as well as those from abroad). We pay high taxes here in Italy and I cannot see why the people here have to be burdened with more costs, especially being forced to pay fees to drive on the expressways.

In the U.S.A there are also toll roads, but the Interstate is gratis. Is it just and fair to make private citizens (I am not referring to commercial vehicles like trucks) pay to drive on roads? Shouldn't the government protect the consumer (drivers) from having to pay to drive on roads, managed by private companies such as "Autostrada", that are of poor quality? Here in Milan area, for instance, the expressways are very narrow as compared to Germany, Denmark, and of course the U.S.A.; there are no shoulders for example. Should private companies be allowed to manage roads used by the public if they do not keep up a minimum standard?
